Art Education Major

Towson University offers a 5-year BS degree in Art Education, consisting of Core requirements, professional education requirements, Art + Design, Art History, Art Education and art-specific reading courses. The program is recognized nationally in the study of Art Education as one providing both depth and breadth. One of the textbooks used in the Art Education sequence is, Becoming an Art Teacher by Dr. Jane Bates of Towson University, Professor Emeritus of Towson University.

Department of Art + Design does not guarantee admission into the Art Education
Students in the Art Education program receive certification enabling them to teach art in Maryland in grades PK-12, we also have reciprocity with nearly all 50 states. In addition to meeting the Core requirements (45 credits), students complete Art Education and professional education requirements for 97 credits. The entire program is approximately 142 credits. The Art Education block is taken in the last three semesters of the program.
Students graduating for the program are highly sought after throughout the state of Maryland, as well as in other states throughout the country.
Learning goals for Art Education include:
Develop skills in the making of art using a wide range of media and processes applicable within the PK-12 grade range.
Demonstrate knowledge of the history of art through time and place, as applicable in PK-12 Art Education.
Demonstrate knowledge of art criticism and aesthetics as applicable in PK-12 Art Education.
Demonstrate ability to plan for art instruction through the design of unit plans, lesson plans, and activities applicable within the PK-12 range.
Demonstrate the ability to teach age appropriate concepts and processes to PK-12 art learners.
Demonstrate the ability to assess one’s own performance as a pre-service teacher and the performance of one’s PK-12 learners in various educational settings.
