Degree Requirements

The Allied Health degree program requires the completion of a minimum of 120 credits. Lower-division courses from your community college will be applied, as appropriate, up to a maximum of 64 credits. A minimum of 32 credits must be in upper-division courses at Towson University. The overall program structure follows:

Required Courses

Core Curriculum Requirements
Students must complete Towson University’s Core Requirements as specified in the
Undergraduate Catalog. In general, a graduate from one of the associate degree programs included in the Allied Health program will need to complete 12 to 21 credits of Core courses in addition to those that are transferred. Several of those courses also satisfy program requirements.

Foundation Course Requirements (18 units)
All students are required to complete 18 units of Foundation courses in the program. Italicized courses are available online.

  • AHLT 310 Management for the Allied Health Professional (3) or
  • AHLT 311 Human Resource Management for the Allied Health Professional (3)
  • AHLT 320 Understanding Evidence Based Practice (3)
  • AHLT 440 *Technical and Professional Issues in Allied Health (3)
  • AHLT 445 Research Methods in Allied Health (3)
  • NURS 416 Multicultural Health Care (3)

*This course will also satisfy the university requirement for an advanced writing course (1D)

Tracks (18 credits)

Students choose one of six tracks: Administration/Management, Advanced Respiratory Therapy,
Family Studies, Education, Science and Professional Preparation,or Health Promotion, Wellness, Prevention and Community Health Education.
All courses and each student’s program of study must be approved by an Allied Health Advisor.

Course Descriptions

  • HLTH 207 Health Care in the U.S. (3)

Analysis of health care demands, cost, supply and recipients. Analysis of different health care settings and factors such as professionalism, the professional education system, authority structures, ethical responsibilities and referrals. Emerging policy debate and role of managed care are also explored.

  • AHLT 310 Management for the Allied Health Professional (3)

Overview of issues and skills involved in effectively managing the health care professional. The course will focus on the development of leadership and managment skills of the health care supervisor.

  • AHLT 311 Human Resource Management for the Allied Health Professional (3)

Human resource management in health, focus on recruitment, development, performance feedback and conflict resolution.

  • AHLT 320 Understanding Evidence Based Practice (3)

Critical search, interpretation and analysis of literature to support best practices in clinical health care. Prerequisite: Admission to the Allied Health program or permission of instructor.

  • AHLT 440 Technial and Professional Issues in Allied Health (3)

Identification and analysis of current issues facing the allied health disciplines, including reimbursement policy, scope of practice, changing educational criteria, credentialing, professional encroachment, medical errors and interdisciplinary teams. Prequisite: AHLT 320.

  • AHLT 445 Research Methods in Allied Health (3)

Basic concepts for understanding and conducting research related to allied health professions. Study of experimental and quasi-experimental designs, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, literature search and critique, basic statistial procedures for data analysis and research ethics. Prequisite: AHLT 320.

  • NURS 416 Cultural Diversity in Health Care (3)

Transcultural health care principles, focusing on cultural influences on biological, psychological, sociological, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of individuals. Historical perspective to contemporary cultural health care. Prequisite: Junior-level standing or permission of the instructor.
