"The college that prepares teachers as facilitators of active learning for diverse and inclusive communities of learners in environments that are technologically advanced"

The College of Education at Towson University has a distinguished history in the preparation of classroom teachers and education specialists. The college offers a comprehensive slate of high quality, performance-based, professional education programs for the initial and advanced preparation of teachers and education specialists.

Towson faculty members include a diverse community of learners/teachers/ scholars with a wide range of strengths and specialties. Teacher education programs across the campus represent the continuing collaborative efforts of faculty members; they are selected as models of excellent teaching and learning skills. Teacher preparation faculty members are committed to a common goal: to prepare and support the continuing development of professional educators at all levels to meet and respond creatively to the critical educational challenges of the twenty first century.

Programs require candidates to master and demonstrate knowledge, skills and professional dispositions that place the learner at the center of an active learning process, and embrace a learner-centered conception of teaching and learning aimed at higher order skills and understanding. In recent years all of the didactic and clinical elements of our programs have been revised to align directly with the 2011 InTASC Standards, current SPA standards, and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards to assure that our students are prepared for emerging changes in how PreK-12 student learning is assessed and how professional educators will be evaluated.

Through innovative partnerships with public schools, certification programs provide students with progressively responsible field and/or clinical experiences in a variety of public school settings. These rich experiences enable students to merge theory with the wisdom of practice, to develop and refine their knowledge and skills of teaching and student learning, and to be well-prepared for entry into their professional roles. Our programs and instructional methods are preparing teachers who can successfully participate in the emerging world of digital learning and teaching.

The majority of graduates from the College of Education enter America's schools as teachers and specialists. Careers for educators are also available in a variety of non-school settings: government, industry, media production, military, correctional institutions, and other emerging fields.
