Welcome to the Department of Secondary and Middle School Education. Teaching is one of the most noble and challenging professions today. Teaching in secondary schools (middle and high schools) affords young professionals exciting opportunities to teach their content, work closely with adolescents and share in the joy of learning, for their students and themselves.

Currently there are several forces impacting the need for secondary school teachers in the United States. First, there is an increase in the secondary school-age population which continues to impact secondary school class size and, second, the teaching profession is heavy with veteran professionals, many of whom will soon retire. However, economic conditions affect state and local revenue, forcing cutbacks or allowing for expansion of schools and faculties. Different localities will experience these forces in different ways.

In addition to classroom teaching, secondary school teachers broaden their career choices by taking positions as principals and assistant principals, department chairpersons, team leaders, guidance counselors, reading specialists, subject area supervisors and curriculum specialists, and a wide variety of central office administrative and service positions.

Towson’s secondary education program is the oldest and largest, by far, in Maryland. We have a stellar reputation for the quality of our graduates. One reason for our success is the exemplary faculty who design and teach our courses. Another plus is the extensive system of professional development Schools we use throughout the state. Finally, there is the support of Towson University’s administrators and alumni who value what we do.
