Declaring Your Major and Advising

Declaring Your Major/Minor

All students choosing a Health Science Major/Minor – must complete the Online Change of Major form. However, in order to become  an “official” major in the department, assigned an advisor, and be permitted to enroll in required courses for their major program, students are required to attend and successfully participate in a  Pre-advising Session.

Those students declaring a Minor in Health Science must call

410-704-2637 to schedule an appointment with the Department Chair.

(Minor students only are not required to attend a Pre-advising session.)

Once assigned an advisor,  all students shall assume the roles and responsibilities in the ongoing Academic Intentional Advising Process, described below.

Pre-Advising Sessions for Majors

Following submission of the Online Change of Major Form, contact the Department of Health Science Administrative Assistant at 410-704-2637 to confirm attendance at a Pre-Advising session.

You must schedule your pre-advising session in advance.  Students who arrive later than 5 minutes after the session begins will not be allowed to participate and must reschedule

Please allow one hour to complete the requirements at your scheduled session. All of the paperwork and requirements of the session are designed to help you have a successful undergraduate experience in the Health Science Department.

Description of the Pre-advising Session

 During the pre-advising session you will:

  • complete and sign a number of forms that indicate you understand the requirements of the major in regards to criminal background checks, full-time internships, and professional standards;
  • receive information about the behavioral expectations of department majors/minors, including civility expectations as well as academic and personal honesty;
  • complete an advising form that includes your personal contact information and a listing of all courses you have taken towards your major.
  • sign the Department of Health Science Professional Behavior Policy

Completed form(s) and copies of all other documents you must sign will be provided to you at the end of the session.

 You will also be required to complete a short (2 paragraph) writing assignment before you leave the advisement session.  This writing assignment will be used to assess your need for special assistance with writing.  The written document will be provided to your academic advisor who will make the assessment of your writing skills.

Academic Intentional Advising

Towson University requires advising of all majors and minors prior to class registration. No advising holds will be lifted prior to registration until students have met with their advisor! Even though course schedules for the next semester may not be set, you can discuss which courses are likely to be offered, any prerequisites that may be needed and the process for obtaining course permissions, as applicable.  (If you meet with your advisor prior to when “advising holds” are set, email or telephone your advisor, reminding him/her about your plan for the semester and request that the advising hold be lifted).

In the ongoing Academic Advising Process, students are expected to do the following:

  • Discuss with your advisor the best method for contacting and setting up appointments for advising.
  • Contact your advisor each semester in a timely manner to discuss your course registration plans for the upcoming semester.
  • Keep your advisor informed of academic difficulties that affect your ability to be successful in your academic goals
  • Follow through on suggestions and procedures recommended by your advisor.
  • Plan ahead!
  • BEFORE you meet with your advisor, prepare for the meeting and bring with you:

            a copy of your Degree Progress Report, a list of classes you would like to take for the next

            semester, and a proposed schedule that includes your most preferred courses for the next

            semester (if course schedules are available).

  • Review your CURRENT degree progress report as students are ultimately responsible to verify degree progress, especially fulfillment of the Gen Eds and 32 upper level credits.
  • Know what your course plans are for the upcoming semester
  • Prepare specific questions for your advisor related to your educational plan and goals.
Be responsible for your own academic career. Be knowledgeable about degree requirements and academic policies. Before you run to your advisor, read and refer to your undergraduate catalog for academic information, rules and processes.
