APPLYING FOR AID

Summer Trimester & Winter Minimester

Winter Minimester

For Federal Pell Grant calculations, the three-week January minimester is combined with the Spring term. Spring Pell Grant disbursements are based on your combined units for the Minimester and Spring terms. Minimester units only change spring aid if they increase your enrollment status for the spring aid period.

Examples:

  • Undergraduate students with 3 minimester units and 9 spring units are eligible for full-time spring Pell Grants (12 units).
  • If you are already full-time based on only your spring units, then minimester units won’t change your Pell Grant.

Summer Trimester

Student financial aid for the Summer Trimester comes from the Federal Pell Grant Program and the Federal Direct Loan programs. To apply for these programs you must meet the following conditions:

  • If you have not already done so, you must submit a 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  (To apply on-line, go to www.fafsa.gov.)

  • You meet also meet all the general eligibility requirements for receiving aid, such as being enrolled in a degree or certificate program and making satisfactory progress.

Federal Pell Grants

If you received a Pell Grant for the 2013-2014 academic year, and you did/will not attend full-time for both Fall 2013 and Spring 2014, they you may have some leftover Pell Grant eligibility for summer 2014.

Your Summer Trimester Pell Grant will be determined using a formula that considers your remaining 2013-14 eligibility, the number of weeks in your Trimester attendance, and the number of units for which you register.

Please note: Pell Grants are for undergraduate, first bachelor’s degree candidates only.

Federal Direct Student Loans

To receive a Federal Direct Student Loan for the Summer Trimester, you must meet these additional conditions:

  • You must register for and maintain a total summer course load of at least 6 units (for example, three units during Summer Session I and three units during Summer Session II)

  • You have not already borrowed the annual loan limit for your grade level (as determined by your earned units) See the table below.

If you borrowed less than the limit for your grade level during the 2013-2014 academic year, you can borrow the difference between your current loan and the limit for your grade level.  (For example, a freshman who borrowed $3,500 for 2013-2014 can borrow up to $2,000 in unsubsidized loan for the Trimester.) You can see how much you borrowed for the current academic year on Towson Online Services.

Complete the 2014 Application for Summer Trimester Financial Aid

To apply for financial aid, complete the Application for Summer Trimester Aid and submit it to the Financial Aid Office.

Because the amount of your aid will depend on the number of sessions you attend, as well as your enrolled units, the Financial Aid Office will process your application only after you register for Summer Trimester classes.  Any change in your schedule may result in a reduction to your aid.

If your Trimester aid exceeds your university charges, your account will have a credit balance.  Rebate checks for credit balances are usually available three weeks after the credit balance occurs.  The Bursar’s Office will issue rebate checks no earlier than the first day of classes.
