We all carry on an internal dialogue, and the things we say to ourselves can dramatically affect our emotions. Think about how this example of negative self-talk makes you feel: “I totally screwed up. I’m so stupid! Why can’t I ever get anything right?” Compare it with this example of positive self-talk: “Darn! That didn’t go very well. Oh well, everyone makes mistakes. What’s important is that I can learn from this and do better next time.” Pay attention to the kinds of things you say to yourself, and try to replace negative self-talk with more positive statements.
