Towson, Md. (February 11, 2009): As a result of a $60,000 grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Initiative, Michael Schroder, Director of Extended Education and Online Learning (DECO) and Mary Fortier, Project Manager in the division of Administration & Finance, have begun work on an online financial literacy course aimed to educate BRAC employees and other Marylanders about personal finance. Many of the new jobs created by the BRAC initiative will require security clearances that can be negatively impacted by poor credit. For this reason this projects aims to provide financial information and free financial Maryland resources to BRAC employees. In the future, the course will be made available to all Marylanders to practice financial responsibility.
The course will consist of seven modules which include pre- and post-assessments. The entire course will be equivalent to one semester course and will include topics such as personal finance and decision making, income and careers, credit and debt, risk management, identity theft and fraud, and saving and investing. The project entails converting current curriculum developed by the Maryland Coalition for Financial Literacy (MCFL) from written to online format. The MCFL is a member-based organization that includes state-wide financial and consumer education organizations. Several members are lending their expertise and other resources to the project.
