Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences

A Message from the Chair

I hope you enjoy learning about the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences at Towson University. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and service to the university and surrounding community. We currently serve nearly 85 undergraduate majors as well as more than 2,500 non-major students each year.

We offer undergraduate programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree in physics, geology or Earth-space science. Within the physics major, there are four concentrations:

David Schaefer, chairman of the Physics Astronomy and Geosciences Department
David Schaefer, Chairman
Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences

We offer two dual-degree programs:

We also offer a graduate degree in applied physics. This degree is part of the Professional Science Masters program and is intended to prepare students for positions in science and technology careers.

Towson University is unique because it has a significant number of education faculty housed in the science departments. The science-education faculty in the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences teach content and methods courses for elementary and early childhood students; provide in-service workshops for teachers in neighboring counties; and conduct research on the teaching and learning of science. The major in Earth-space sciences and the physics secondary education program provide a strong foundation for teaching certification. These programs are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.

I thank you for your interest and I hope you agree that the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences is a remarkable place to study, learn and carry out research.

Best regards,
David Schaefer
