Reading Placement Testing

The Reading Placement Test is administered by Towson University's Academic Achievement Center for transfer students and incoming freshman with low SAT and ACT scores. The Reading Placement test is part of a suite of testing products commonly referred to as ACCUPLACER® tests. These tests were developed by the College Entrance Examination Board to help colleges and universities accurately assess student skill levels.

Who Must Take the Reading Placement Test?

  • All admitted freshmen with SAT scores less than 500 in reading and ACT reading scores less than 21 are required to take the reading placement test
  • Unless exempt, all transfer students with fewer than 30 credits are required to take the reading placement test

What Happens if I Don’t Take the Test?

If you are required to take the test, an academic hold will be placed on your academic record if you . . .

  • Fail to take the placement test prior to your first semester.
  • Or if you do not complete any of the required courses indicated by your placement test scores by the end of your second semester.

How Do I Schedule my Reading Placement Test?

After receiving your email notification to take the reading placement test, you can choose to complete testing on campus or remotely. Either way must schedule your testing session as soon as possible. The sooner you comply the more likely it is you will get your selection of classes. Details about test scheduling can be found on the Scheduling a Testing Session page.

What Is Remote Testing?

Students living more than two hours away may complete placement testing near their home at any college willing to administer the Towson University ACCUPLACER® reading placement test. Students may also take the test at private learning centers that offer proctored testing—such as Sylvan or Huntington. Details about remote testing can be found on the Remote Testing page.

Are there any Exemptions?

Yes. The list of exemptions from taking the reading placement test is located on the Exemptions from Testing page.
