Undergraduate Research Funding Programs

The Undergraduate Research Committee supports undergraduate research through the three programs described below. The guidelines and application form for 2009-2010 Research Grants, Travel Grants and Small Projects Awards is now available.

Research Grants
Supply and expense grants of up to $500 per project are awarded to Towson University undergraduate students engaged in scholarly research activities under the mentorship of Towson University faculty members. Research funds may be used for supplies, books, software, equipment and travel as appropriate to the project. Projects may be carried out over one or two semesters and involve close collaboration of the student and faculty member.

Travel Grants
The travel grant program allows students to apply for up to $500 from the Towson Undergraduate Research Committee to attend a professional meeting at which the student will be the primary presenter of an oral seminar or a research poster. Requests larger than $500 will be considered provided the application provides well-documented need for the additional funds.

Small Project Grants
These Grants award up to $100 for smaller projects. Funds may be used for supplies, books, software, equipment and fees, as appropriate to the project.

Application
The fall application deadline for Research and Travel Awards is September 27. The spring application deadline is February 13. Small Project Awards have no set deadline, but the committee will start reviewing applications on a rolling basis starting September 27.

The Undergraduate Research Committee may add additional deadlines for Travel Grants each semester, if funds are available. The second deadline will be announced after the committee has considered all applications from the September 27 deadline. We hope to let applicants know the status of their requests within two weeks of each deadline.

Procedures for Funded Applicants
Please review the following procedures for information about disbursement of grant award monies. Procedures differ depending on the type of cost. Please follow the instructions in order to receive your full grant award. In any case where forms are required, students may make an appointment with Jennifer Toll to fill out the form, or may call 410-704-5064 or e-mail jtoll@towson.edu for assistance.
