Civic Engagement & Leadership

Information for Faculty

Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning. Service-learning is effective in both instilling civic responsibility in students and helping them comprehend and synthesize course material.

The Towson University Faculty Handbook, Service-Learning at Towson University: A Resource for Faculty (PDF), is available to help faculty become familiar with service-learning and to provide numerous tools to enhance service-learning courses.

Service-Learning Grant Opportunity for Fall 2012, Winter 2013, Spring 2013 & Summer 2013

Faculty are eligible to apply for grant money to support service-learning course activities. Funds should be used to allow a professor to “take a course to the next level” in regard to service-learning and permit the class to engage in relevant activities it would otherwise be unable to complete.

Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program

The Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program provides support for TU faculty interested in creating a new service-learning course or incorporating a significant service-learning component into an existing course. Applications will be available for the 2014-2015 cohort in January 2014.

Service-Learning Assessment Tools

Assessment can help determine the effectiveness of a service-learning course and its impact on students, faculty and community partners. The Office of Civic Engagement offers several assessment tools to help faculty collect usable data from service-learning courses, easily receive feedback from community partners and students, and provide feedback on faculty service-learning experiences.
