Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning. Service-learning is effective in both instilling civic responsibility in students and helping them comprehend and synthesize course material. (Jacoby, Service-Learning in Higher Education, 1996)
Faculty are eligible to apply for grant money to support service-learning course experiences. Funds allow professors to “take the course to the next level” regarding service-learning, and they permit classes to engage in relevant community service opportunities.
The Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program provides support for TU faculty interested in incorporating a significant service-learning component into a course. Applications will be available for the 2015-2016 cohort in May 2015.
Assessment can help determine the effectiveness of a service-learning course and its impact on students, faculty and community partners. The Office of Civic Engagement & Leadership offers several assessment tools to help faculty collect usable data from service-learning courses, easily receive feedback from community partners and students, and provide feedback on faculty service-learning experiences.
